This wooden figurine is designed with a flat back and features a special loop/hook, allowing it to be easily mounted on a wall.
This handcrafted wooden figurine powerfully depicts a defining moment in Norse mythology: the sacrifice of Týr's hand to the mighty wolf Fenrir. Týr, a prominent god of war, justice, and honorable single combat, is renowned for his unwavering courage and his commitment to upholding oaths and laws. This pivotal event showcases his extraordinary bravery and his crucial role in safeguarding the Æsir from the destructive potential of Fenrir. This meticulously carved wooden piece captures a scene of profound heroism and sacrifice, making it a captivating addition to a personal collection, a striking decorative accent for a home, or a powerful focal point on an altar.
In this intricate sculpture, Týr is shown bravely placing his hand into Fenrir's mouth as the gods attempt to bind the colossal wolf with the unbreakable magical chain, Gleipnir. The chains, a central element of this myth, are meticulously described in the Eddas as being crafted from impossible elements: "the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird." This detail underscores the immense power and unique nature of the binding that required such a significant sacrifice. At this climactic moment, Týr loses his hand, a direct consequence of Fenrir realizing the gods' deceit. This act is a testament to Týr's selflessness and his ultimate commitment to protect the divine realm, beautifully capturing the essence of sacrifice, bravery, and the eternal struggle between order and chaos within the Norse narrative.
