Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead in Norse mythology. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and sister to Fenrir and Jörmungandr. In the myths, Odin appoints her to rule over those who die outside of battle, making her a powerful figure connected with death, transition, fate, and the unseen world.
Her image is often associated with duality: life and death, beauty and decay, mercy and inevitability. For modern Norse pagan and Heathen practice, Hel can symbolize acceptance, ancestral memory, shadow work, transformation, and respect for the natural cycle of endings and renewal.
